Rodrigo Damm is an unlucky SOB.
He never actually lost, but he still found himself fighting on the preliminary card for UFC 147 after being disqualified from The Ultimate Fighter this season due to kidney troubles. Then he got lined up to fight against Anistavio Medeiros, the season's goofball who gets everyone's nerves and with whom Damm feuded during the season.
Any sort of frustration Damm had with the show or with Medeiros, however, got worked out as he scored an early knockout victory.
What we'll remember about this fight
If you actually watched TUF: Brazil, you will undoubtedly remember the wackiness of Medeiros, who was similar to Alex Caceres and Jamie Yager in his lack of maturity. This grated on Damm, who is 32 years old and even then is still wise beyond his years after fighting across the world against the likes of Gilbert Melendez and Eiji Mitsuoka. It led to huffiness at the weigh-ins and added a bit more intrigue to the bout than would normally be expected from a preliminary-card match.
What we learned about Anistavio Medeiros
Considering the fight lasted just two minutes, it still had as much “weird” as almost any. Medeiros hates his mouthpiece, loves to dance, enjoys kicking Rodrigo Damm in the groin and apparently cries when he loses.
Not to be mean, however. One cannot quite blame the man for crying after having his face busted and losing his job.
What we learned about Rodrigo Damm
This bout actually had a bit in common with Edson Barboza vs. Jamie Varner. This was a smarter, more experienced fighter dismantling a younger guy. While one should not read too much into this, he showed solid stand-up and has a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt in a division with few stars. He could be another knockout or two away from being in the title picture.
What's next for Medeiros
The Brazilian MMA circuit. Again, not to hate on him, but the UFC is not kind to the losers of these Ultimate Fighter finale cards.
What's next for Damm
It is hard to say, but there are plenty of featherweights coming off losses that he could be matched up against. Jonathan Brookins, Leonard Garcia, Nam Phan and any other featherweight winner off this card would make for a sensible follow-up for Damm.
