A light-heavyweight bout between Gian Villante (9-3) and Derrick Mehmen (12-4) is slated for next month's "Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier" event.
Villante, a New Yorker, recently alertednewsday.comof the matchup.
Villante, a football player and wrestler while at Hofstra University, made his pro MMA debut in 2009 with the Northeast's Ring of Combat promotion. After posting a 7-1 record, he ultimately signed with Strikeforce but suffered a TKO loss to Chad Griggs and then a decision defeat to Lorenz Larkin. However, he's rebounded and moved his Strikeforce record to .500 with recent wins over Keith Berry and Trevor Smith.
Mehmen actually fought Saturday night in the upstart WMMA organization and suffered a decision loss to former UFC fighter Rodney Wallace. Prior to that, the onetime Bellator fighter , and former NJCAA All-American wrestler had won four of five fights, which included a decision victory over Roy Jones (the MMA fighter, not the boxer) in his Strikeforce debut back in August.
"Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier" takes place May 19 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.
