Frank Mir Believes Alistair Overeem is Innocent Until Proven Guilty

When Alistair Overeem tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone, many believed Frank Mir (Pictured) was the frontrunner to serve as substitute and challenge Junior dos Santos for his heavyweight crown at UFC 146. Although UFC president Dana White promised Mir would still fight Cain Velasquez in the May 26th event, Mir is fully prepared just in case he?s called up from the bullpen.
?As of right now I?m still training for Cain,? Mir stated on Spike TV?s MMAUncensoredLive. ?Obviously, I?m like everybody else, I see that in the background there?s a possibility Overeem?s not going to be able to make the fight on the 26th, and if that?s the case, I wanna make sure I?m in a situation where I can jump in.
?I feel that I have the most credentials going into it. I think I have the longest winning streak of any of the heavyweights that were already posted onto that card to fight. As far as where the rankings are, I feel I have the most credentials going in, and I?m motivated to do so.?
Although Mir is the favorite to land the gig, there?s still the possibility the Nevada State Athletic Commission will grant Overeem his license at his April 24th hearing. While the court of public opinion has already dropped the hammer on ?The Demolition Man,? Mir won?t pass judgment until the NSAC allows Overeem to clear the air.
?I?m very much on the point of innocent, until proven guilty,? he said. ?If he has a hearing and he comes in and speaks, I wanna hear what he has to say and what?s going on. ? Give the man a chance to speak about it.?
If the commission buys Overeem?s story ? which many believe they might if he plays the Testosterone Replacement Therapy card, as most expect he will ? Mir wouldn?t have any qualms with Team dos Santos wanting to revise the original bout agreements.
?There?s nothing wrong with putting a few hurdles in front of your opponent,? Mir shared. ?If dos Santos? camp wanted to put some stipulations behind his license or the conditions in terms of fighting, I see that as a good thing.
?I think that?s on the part of his management and the people around him. Dos Santos is a fighter ? his first and foremost thought process is to be he just wants to fight Overeem no matter what.?
UFC 146 takes place Memorial Day weekend inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
