After months of build up and a lot of bad blood, Anderson Silva came out throwing with bad intentions. That led to an immediate takedown by Sonnen, who proceeded to keep top control throughout the entire first round. The second was an entirely different story, however.
Silva stuffed the first attempt from Sonnen, then worked well in the clinch. Sonnen tried to shoot in again, but got stuffed. As they separated, Silva stood with his arms down and let Sonnen rush him. He landed a couple of strikes while avoiding damage from Sonnen. Then the challenger threw an ill-advised spinning back fist, which missed and sent him stumbling.
Silva engaged, and landed a vicious knee to the body. It looked like it might have been illegally directed to the head, but the replay showed it hit Sonnen in the body. He followed up with strikes, looking for his openings, and he delivered the strikes to force the stoppage.
Afterward, he squashed the bad blood with Sonnen, and in turn killed Sonnen's gimmick by asking for a show of manners from his Brazilian fans with a cheer for Sonnen and then inviting him to a barbecue at his home. It wasn't the epic five-round battle this time around, but Silva once again reestablished himself as the greatest fighter in UFC history with yet another victory.
